Laminated Glass

Laminated glass is a Grade A safety glass, manufactured by adhering two or more pieces of glass together with a flexible interlayer. The interlayer is generally either a PVB (poly vinyl butyral) or a CIP (resin). The glass and interlayer are bonded together using heat and pressure in an autoclave. Virtually all glass types can be laminated and the thickness and type of interlayer can be altered to provide security, energy efficiency, acoustic and decorative solutions.

Annealed laminated glass can be cut and further processed. Toughened and Heat Strengthened combinations are also available, including the incorporation of tinted and coated glass types. Toughened laminated combinations are specifically beneficial when safety is paramount. The combination offers the strength of toughened glass with the additional benefit of the interlayer holding the pieces of glass together, should a breakage occur.

PVB Laminated glass offers 99% reduction in UV Transmission, while still allowing natural light to pass through. It therefore helps to protect carpets and furniture from fading due to short-wave ultra violet radiation.

The Australian Glass Group offers the following Clear, Grey, Green, Bronze and White Translucent Laminates in thicknesses 6.38mm – 12.38mm, as well as the following speciality laminates:

Thermal Stress
All performance glass may also be subject to thermal stress, and we recommend a thermal assessment analysis is carried out. This assessment considers glass type, frame type, glazing method. To confirm if the glass selected for your project is at risk of thermal stress, please complete the attached questionnaire, and fax to (03) 9730 7488.

Colour Matching
Laminated glass with a tinted interlayer does not match exactly to tinted glass. Care should be taken to ensure colour consistency if required.

Edge Protection
Laminated glass products must be glazed to protect the interlayer from direct exposure to the elements. Water and moisture can affect the interlayer, causing product breakdown and potentially impact on the structural integrity. Incorrect glazing will also void any warranties.
