Toughened & Heat Strengthened Glass
Toughened safety glass is manufactured by the Australian Glass Group to strict standards using the latest in Tamglass toughening equipment. Toughened glass is manufactured by first cutting and processing the glass to the required specifications. It is then heated in the furnace to around 650°C, which brings the glass to a plastic state. The glass is then transferred to the quench section and is cooled rapidly; this is achieved by a series of high pressure air nozzles blowing air on to the top and bottom of the glass.
This process creates high compression stress in the glass surface, the centre of the glass remains in tension due to the quick cooling of the surface of the glass and the slower cooling of the centre. The physical characteristics of the glass remain the same, however the added stresses in the glass increase the thermal and mechanical strength of the glass.
Toughened glass is a Grade A safety glass, its strength is 4 to 5 times greater than that of float glass of the same thickness. In the unlikely event of toughened glass breaking, it will break into small particles significantly reducing the risk of serious injury.
Toughened glass can withstand a temperature differential of up to 250°C making it the perfect product for applications such as showerscreens, splashbacks and for areas where thermal stress is a concern.
Heat strengthened glass is produced following the same method as toughened glass, however the cooling process is slower. Heat strengthened glass is generally twice as strong as annealed glass, however it is NOT a safety glass. When heat strengthened glass breaks, it breaks into larger pieces and tends to stay in an opening until it is replaced.
AGG's brand of toughened glass is Tempershield®.
